From day 1 students are in clinic two days a week which provides a rare opportunity. Every type of ache, pain, injury, age, disability and disorder confronts students, that in many courses they would have only read about in a text book. This style of training enables students hands on contact and understanding and the skills to deal with whatever may come their way in their own future businesses, or places of employ. The palpation skills developed are second to none, with the amount and varying type of clients students are able to work on and observe.
The clinic also has a well-established outstation program and participates in many sporting events. This provides an incredible learning curve for students and provides massage therapy for those in the community. Once a week clients visit the clinic from Murray Human Services which is a center for individuals with a disability ranging from downs syndrome, acquired brain injury and congenital disorders visits the . This is a unique opportunity for students and has proven popular for its learning curve and rewarding experiences.
Outstation placement is also provided by an aged care facility, Wharparilla Lodge, where massage therapies has been vital in assisting the general well being of the elderly and for specifically assisting in the care plans of clients suffering from, dementia, strokes, lack of mobility and for those bed ridden. While touch is a powerful healing tool and comfort for those who are alone, we also provide the smiling face attached to the massaging hands.
Steps AHOH are yet another outstation where our therapists and students provides support. Each Wednesday students attend to clients with a range of complaints and disorders often exacerbated by stress.
Sporting event experience is gained through several organized activities. The Murray to Moyne is a fundraising cycle relay that endures 48 hours of athlete support. Massage therapists gain lots of skills and knowledge from the responsibility looking after their team. Sweat versus Steam, Port to Port, Triathlons and sport specific events all lead to a full and rounded education in the many aspects of massage therapy.
The Case Study Program now in its 28th year provides a plethora of massage therapies for rehabilitation, emotional support, networking and education to members of our local community. Students are given the responsibility of creating the client’s treatment plan and they then overseer the implementation of the plan. Both the client and the student benefit from such a concerted effort.
“After having an accident at work, I tried everything from chiro to physio. Nothing worked. I thought to myself, if massage therapy doesn’t work, that’s it. Thank god it did. I feel better than I have in years.” Anon
“The help that I have received from the students and staff at MCVE has been invaluable” Harry Logie
